CAE Proposal example sentences and structure

In the writing section of the Cambridge Advanced English exam (CAE)   students often have to choose between writing out a proposal or a report.

They are similar in structure, style of English used, length (in words) and how you need to approach the questions.

The CAE Report question is focussed on how things currently are, so the main part of your answer should be about the current situation.

Your answer for the Proposal should be more concerned about the possibilities of what may happen. Therefore, the majority of your writing should be concentrated on Future Recommendations.

As we learnt in the previous CAE blog, it’s very easy to quickly write a plan for these type of questions.

The plan gives you a solid structure to work from, so that you can concentrate on making your English writing look natural and impressive without constantly worrying about where you are in the answer.

CAE PROPOSAL ESSENTIALS

  1. Remember to ANSWER THE QUESTION that you were asked (see video about answering the question)
  2. Use a clear and simple layout with headings for each section
  3. Write in a formal and impersonal style
  4. Use bullet points if writing out long sentences will be too long for the word count
  5. Total word count should be 220 – 260 words (Don’t write too few or too many words)
  6. Start the proposal with a clear sentence that states the purpose/aim
  7. Finish your answer with a final sentence that is a summary of your opinion (based on what you have previously written)

CAE PROPOSAL STRUCTURE

As you can see in the video below, there are standard headings that you should use. They can be adapted to almost any type of proposal question:

  • Introduction
  • Current Situation
  • Suggestions
  • Final Recommendations

CAE PROPOSAL: EXAMPLE SENTENCES AND LANGUAGE

As you should do in most Academic English writing tests, you should write in a formal style.

Do not use abbreviations like they’re, coz, gonna, I’m or any kind of slang words!

Try to use passive grammar sentences. So, instead of “I think that the school should…” it is better to write “It is recommended that the school…”
