Your vs You’re; English Grammar Test

Your or you’re?

Which one should you use for perfect English grammar?

If you are learning English, don’t worry if the “your v you’re” question is giving you problems.

Actually lots of native speakers of English mix up these two words!

It is very common to see someone write YOUR incorrectly on Facebook, when really they should be writing, YOU’RE for correct English

THE BIG PROBLEM

The problem with you’re and your is that when you say the words out loud they are pronounced in exactly the same way!

If you know the phonemic script (like you see in a dictionary) this is how you say the both:  /jɔː/

THE EASY GRAMMAR RULE

If you can say YOU ARE in the sentence you are speaking or writing, then that can be written as YOU’RE

If you can NOT say YOU ARE in the sentence you are saying, then it will be YOUR

YOU’RE

What does YOU’RE mean? YOU’RE only means YOU ARE.

YOU’RE is simply a short way (a ‘contraction’) of saying the two words YOU and ARE.

Example:

You are my best friend  =  You’re my best friend

You are welcome  =  You’re welcome

(Even if you are young, it’s still important to know good grammar – look at Harry Styles correcting the your/you’re issue on a fan’s sign at a One Direction concert)

YOUR

YOUR is a word to show that you are talking about something that belongs to the person you are talking to (in grammar terms it is called a ‘determiner’)

Example:  Can I use your laptop?

* Can I use you’re laptop?  IS INCORRECT because it would be Can I use you are laptop?
