When I was young, one of the most popular bands at the time was Nirvana. Thus, when the lead singer Kurt Cobain died, it had a big impact on my generation. He was only 27. Around the same time I saw a biopic film with Val Kilmer, The Doors, which got me listening to their music. I found out that the lead singer, Jim Morrison, died and again he was 27. Fast forward to today, and this generation has another tragic young death of a musician – Amy Winehouse. When I heard that she had died, I wanted to know how old she was. Sure enough, she too was 27. Therefore, I did a bit of research and found that there were other famous people, mainly musicians, who had died at this very same age. All of them were very talented and took drugs; hence, all suffered a very sad death. Here are some members of the “27 Club”:
Brian Jones – died. 1969
The original lead guitarist for the Rolling Stones, he was found dead in his swimming pool in Sussex. Due to him taking a lot of alcohol and drugs prior to his death, this is what probably caused his death. Officially though, it was by ‘misadventure’.
Janis Joplin – died. 1970
During the late 60’s, she was the queen of rock and roll. At that time, the rock music industry was completely male-dominated and for that reason, her success was seen as quite extraordinary because of this. However, if you hear her voice and music, you can understand why. Unfortunately her death was because of a Heroin overdose.
Jean-Michel Basquiat – died. 1988
Although a musician, poet and originally a graffiti artist, he was famous for a being a New York artist, producing amazing neo-expressionist paintings. Since he was a great friend of Andy Warhol, Basquiat become more depressed and addicted to Heroin when he died in 1987. This led to his death of a Heroin overdose.
Jimi Hendrix – died.1970
He is considered the greatest electrical guitarist in musical history, so he was also known for being the most influential of his era. After a party in London, he choked on his own vomit and consequently died. However, there have been conspiracy theories claiming that he had been murdered.
Jim Morrison – died. 1971
The lead singer of The Doors, he is regarded as one of the most iconic figures in rock music history because he had a wild and charismatic behaviour. There was no official reason for his death, other than he died in his bath in Paris. That is why several other reasons have been mentioned, particularly a heroin overdose.
Kurt Cobain – died.1994
Another iconic rock musician this time for alternative music, Kurt Cobain was the lead singer of the band Nirvana. He suffered from depression and was a heroin addict, which subsequently lead to him committing suicide with a shotgun. As a result of their young deaths, their legacy will forever live in history. Would that still be the case if they hadn’t died? Who knows, but let’s just hope that this particular club will not allow any more members.
