New Harry Potter play in London 2016

Amazing news for the millions of Harry Potter fans around the world – there will be a completely new play about the boy wizard, written by J K Rowling herself that will open in a West End London theatre in 2016.

On the J K Rowling twitter account this morning, her followers were greeted with the incredible news:  “Today is a very special day for two reasons. Firstly, Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone was published in the UK 18 years ago!” “I’m also very excited to confirm today that a new play called Harry Potter and the Cursed Child will be opening in London next year.”

What did J K Rowling say?

Harry Potter and the Cursed Child will not be a summary or “greatest hits/moments” of the Harry Potter books. It is a completely new original drama that Rowling wrote on Twitter is “an untold part of Harry’s story”.

However, she did also say that “it is not a prequel!”

J K Rowling wrote that she put this story in a theatre/stage environment, and not in a new novel, because she thought this was the right way to present this specific story. She tweeted…

“To answer one inevitable (and reasonable) question – why isn’t Cursed Child a new novel? – I am confident that when audiences see the play they will agree that it was the only proper medium for the story”

She also added: ‘I don’t want to say too much more, because I don’t want to spoil what I know will be a real treat for fans’.

What a way to celebrate an anniversary!

How do I get tickets to Harry Potter London play?

Getting a seat at the new Harry Potter play is definitely going to be the hottest ticket in London’s West End. Well, forget about just London’s theatreland. This is surely going to be the hottest ticket in the world considering that the Harry Potter books have sold over 450 million copies worldwide and have been translated into 78 languages!

Tickets will first be available on sale this autumn with further details being announced in late July 2015. The best way to make sure you get a ticket is to go to the official website www.harrypottertheplaylondon.com and click to register for ticket information.

Cursed Child will premiere at The Palace Theatre in London which is currently showing The Commitments which the SGI London Student Social Programme just visited this month on one of our weekly trips to London theatre and musicals.

I’m pretty sure that in 2016, as well as visiting the Must-See Sights of London, the SGI students will also be making a trip to see a new play about a very famous schoolboy wizard.
