London Student social programme in February

The legendary SGI Student Social programme keeps getting better.

Just look below at all the amazing events around London on offer for our students this month!

WEEK 1

Monday, 1st Feb – WELCOME MEETING: 3:10 – 3:30

Meet some of the SGI teachers in the student’s computer are downstairs for a friendly welcome and chat. Maybe you would like to ask some advice about where to go and what to do in London if it’s your first day

MONDAY DRINKS: 3:30pm – 4:45pm

An SGI teacher will take you to a local pub, where for 90 mins you can chat to teachers and students from other classes and keep practising your English. You will need about £5 for your drinks.

Tuesday, 2nd Feb – WALKING TOUR: 3:15pm

2000 Years of London History – A walk around some of the most historic parts of London with SGI’s qualified London walking guide, Owen. He will tell you amazing little interesting facts all along the route, that make the guided walks one of the most memorable social programme events.

Wednesday, 3rd Feb – THEATRE: 6:45pm

Phantom of the Opera – One of the most popular musicals of all time and has been playing in London to packed out audiences since the 1980s! The normal ticket price is an expensive £68, but with a special deal that SGI has with the theatre, our students on the SGI social programme get the best seats in the house for only £25!!! Put your name down on the list at reception on Monday or Tuesday to book your discounted ticket.

Thursday, 4th Feb – MUSEUM: 3:15pm

National Portrait Gallery – Entrance is free to one of London’s most famous and popular galleries. Just by Trafalgar Square, the collection holds portraits of legendary British figures, such as David Bowie, Paul McCartney, Margaret Thatcher, Princess Diana, The Royal Family and many more

Friday, 5th Feb – NIGHTCLUB: 10pm – 4am

A fantastic night with ‘Lost in London’ at XOYO club in Shoreditch in uber-trendy East London. You must have official identification (like a passport or driving licence) to prove your age to get in. Speak to the people on reception for more details. Please note, that this is not an SGI event, so there will be no teacher to host this, and you will have to find your own way to the club.

Saturday, 6th Feb – DAY TRIP: 08:30am – Late Evening

Visit the world-famous places of Oxford, Windsor and Eton in an all-day-long trip out of London. This costs £35 and all transport is included and you will have a friendly, informative guide to keep the interesting facts flowing throughout your day trip around these beautiful and charming English cities packed full of history.

Tuesday, 9th Feb – WALKING TOUR: 3:15pm

This week’s free walking tour with Owen is called, ‘Camden & the world of Amy Winehouse’. Owen will guide you round this really cool and magical district of London, where you will walk through the markets, colourful shops and maybe see some old-school Punks with their mohicans at Camden Lock. Camden is where Amy Winehouse grew up, hung out and also where she had a home when she died, and Owen will take you tosee  the famous places associated with the famous singer.

Wednesday, 10th Feb – CULTURE: 3:30pm

A new festival getting a lot of attention because it is just beautiful. Lights, culture, art and food will be an amazing memory to take home with after you have visited the Magical Lantern Festival. Ticket price is £16

Thursday, 11th Feb – THEATRE: 6:30pm

Guys and Dolls is a famous old-school musical from America (see the video below for a preview), and the normal £65 ticket will only cost you an incredible £22 if you are an SGI student!

Friday, 12th Feb – NIGHTCLUB: 5pm – 3am

If you love salsa then you are in for a real treat. At Salsa Club in Leicester Square, you can see some of London’s best Salsa dancers doing their thing as lots of people from the Latin America communities around  London go to this club to bust their moves on a Friday night. Expect to dance! See the people on school reception for more details on this club night with Lost in London.

Saturday, 13th Feb – DAY TRIP: 07:50am – 18:30

A day trip to Cambridge, the world-famous university city. A bus will take you to Cambridge (very early pick-up time of 7:50am) to see this magnificent city. The day trip costs £24


WEEK 3

Tuesday, 16th Feb – CULTURE: 3:15pm

Kew Gardens is a magnificent park created by The Victorians which has some of the most incredible plants and trees from around the world. If the weather is good, this is really one of the best places to relax in London. Entrance fee is £13

Wednesday, 17th Feb – WALKING TOUR: 3:30pm

‘Greenwich and the Meridian Line’ is the theme of Owen’s walk today. Owen and his little doggy, Jess will show you around this naval/maritime district of London and you can see all of the capital city from an excellent viewpoint. You can also take pictures of you standing over the Greenwich Meridian Line, which is the place where the world starts its time zones from.

Thursday, 18th Feb – THEATRE: 6:45pm

Wonder.land is a new show based on Lewis Carrol’s ‘Alice in Wonderland. The music was created by Damon Albarn from the band, Blur and it’s one of the hottest theatre tickets in town right now. Our students at SGI get the best seats for an amazing discounted £15

Friday, 19th Feb – 10pm to late

Piccadilly Institue  is a nightclub in the West End. See reception for full details of this ‘Lost in London’ student clubbing event

Saturday, 20th Feb – DAY TRIP: 08:30am – Late Evening

Bath is a beautiful, historic Roman spa town in the South West of England and well worth a visit. Stonehenge is probably the most famous pre-historic mystical stone circle on the planet. You can visit both of these ‘camera-friendly’ places on a day trip out of London on a coach tour, with the ticket costing £45


WEEK 4

Tuesday, 23rd Feb – CULTURE: 3:15pm

Tate Modern Gallery is FREE to enter, but some of the current exhibitions may have an entrance fee. But you don’t need to pay to see famous artwork by Monet, Rothko, Warhol and all the modern art greats in this incredible uilding on London’s South Bank just next to the Millennium bridge. Make sure you visit the cafe on the 4th floor when you need a break – you have incredible views of St Paul’s Cathedral and The River Thames from the balcony there.

Wednesday, 24th Feb – WALKING TOUR: 3:15pm

Owen’s guided walk around ‘Fashion London’ will take you to some of the most important places in the WORLD for fashion. As always, Owen’s walk will be filled of super interesting information that gives you an insider’s look at London. All SGI guided walks are FREE for SGI students.

Thursday, 25th Feb –  MOVIE NIGHT: 6:30pm

Star Wars – The Force Awakens. Yes! A visit to a London cinema to see the biggest movie of the year! Feel like a kid again, as you watch this blockbuster in English maybe for the first time 🙂  The cinema ticket will cost you £12… Popcorn not included 🙂

Friday, 26th Feb – NIGHTCLUB: 5:30pm – 3am

A night out at Roadhouse Bar in Covent Garden in the centre of London. See reception for full details.

Saturday, 27th Feb – DAY TRIP: 08:30am – 6:30pm

Canterbury is the destination for today’s ‘out of London’ day trip. The day-long guided trip and transport will cost you £30 to see this lovely Roman city in the “garden of England” with it’s towering cathedral
