5 Benefits of Getting a Part-Time Job While You’re Studying

You’ve come to the UK to study but have you also considered working here?  Many students at SGI decide to look for a part-time job while they are studying in London.  They need to fit their work in around their studies so a position that offers flexibility is preferable; working as a shop assistant, bartender, waiter/waitress, chef, receptionist, au-pair or babysitter are popular options.

Such positions can be found online, by word-of-mouth or simply by handing out your CV directly to prospective employers.  You should make sure your CV is up-to-date and accompanied by a cover letter that has been tailored to the position. Take a look at our recommendations for CV writing here!

So what can you gain from getting a part-time job?  Here are 5 great reasons to take the plunge:

  1. You Can Improve Your English
Being exposed to a variety of accents and voices is great training for your listening skills and you will get to practice what you’ve learned in class in authentic situations.
  2. You Can Experience Local Culture
As an insider, you will be able to observe the dynamics and values of the organisation and how people relate to each other: these can be useful insights into your host culture and society.
  3. You Can Gain Work ExperienceGetting a part-time job may look good on your CV, especially if you haven’t had a lot of work experience.  Even if your job is not in the sector you eventually hope to work in, you may develop transferable skills such as leadership, communication and problem-solving.
  4. You Can Develop Independence
Working is the perfect opportunity to develop the essential life skills of money and time management.
  5. You Can Make Money
This is perhaps the most obvious benefit, especially for those students who absolutely have to work in order to make ends meet.  London, in particular, is a notoriously expensive city.

So, if you think you can balance work and study, why not give it a go?
