Social Programme Musicals in London February 2016

The students at Saint George International have a social programme event every afternoon after English lessons have finished.

Going on the social programme event and talking in English to students and teachers from other classes is a rewarding, interesting and friendly experience and is great “no pressure” practice for improving your speaking and listening skills.

Once a week, (usually Wednesday or Thursday) one of our teachers, Owen, takes a group of students to a London show: mostly it’s a musical, but sometimes a Shakespeare play in the summer months.

These theatre trips are super popular because even if you don’t have perfect English just yet, the singing, dancing, bright lights and entertainment of a musical means that you will get lots of enjoyment out of the night.

Also, Owen manages to arrange fantastic discounts with the theatres, so that a normal £68 ticket for a great seat, is available for the SGI students for about £25, or even less. It’s an amazing offer only for people on the SGI social programme, and you should take advantage of that while you are studying in London with us.

As you can see in the video, there is lots to get excited for February about if you are a lover of musicals.

3rd Feb, 6.30pm –  The Lion King

The fastest selling musical of all time when it was launched. The blockbuster Disney film comes to life with fantastic sing-a-long songs by Elton John. It has been running in London since 1999 and is the highest grossing musical of all time with ticket sales of over $6 billion! Don’t miss it!

11 February, 6.30pm –  Guys and Dolls.

Owen says: Join us for the greatest 1950s New York musical of all time!  Gamblers and gangsters, showgirls and church people in a great mix of amazing singing and dancing! In my opinion, the best musical ever created, starring the wonderful Sophie Thompson (Emma’s sister).  Best seats reduced from £65 to £22.

18th February, 6:30pm – Phantom of the Opera

Andrew Lloyd Webber’s mega hit musical has been seen by over 135 million people in 27 different countries around the world, but London is the original show and it has been delighting audiences every night since 1986! It is the second most profitable musical ever (only beaten by The Lion King) and SGI students will see it in February for only £25 (normal ticket price £65)!

And to look forward to for next month….. 15 March, 7.30pm –  Motown the Musical.

Owen says: Another transfer from Broadway in New York, now in London, this is the story of (in my opinion) the greatest music label ever, with all those wonderful and memorable hits recreated.  Best seats reduced from £65 to £35.

To join any of these theatre trips, you must write your name down on the Social Programme list (which is at school reception) on Monday or Tuesday before the event to reserve your place. There are usually only about 12 tickets available each week at these discounted prices. So, if you want to go to a musical while you are in London, make sure you book your place with the people on reception as soon as possible to avoid disappointment.
