Dear student,

Late Spring/Early Summer. What a great time of year! The streets of Central London  are alive with people dining, drinking and generally socialising outside in the cafes, restaurants and bars that can be found everywhere. One minute from the school we have a great open area, known as Market Place where you will find plenty of places to relax in the sunshine after your classes at SGI have finished. As always there's plenty to do in the capital; have a look at the 'Events in London' feature, as you'd expect there's loads of great things to do.

The school is as busy as ever with good numbers of students for all our courses. As always we have a lively and interesting social programme for our students….have a look below at the April social events and photos feature.

Enjoy the Newsletter!

Best Wishes

School Director

SGI: in the neighbourhood of Fitzrovia; Interesting Fact no 2 (the second in a series)

As you know, SGI is based in Central London, close to Oxford Street and Regent Street. Our neighbourhood is known as Fitzrovia, a district with a wonderfully long and colourful history. Here's the second in the series about SGI's fascinating local area.

American music legend - Bob Dylan –  first ever London and European appearance at the King and Queen pub, Foley Street, Fitzrovia.
The King and Queen is a traditional small English pub, just a five minute walk from the school and a place where SGI regularly holds student quiz nights and social events in the upstairs room. What many people don't know is that the 'upstairs room' of this modest English public house was the setting for the first ever appearance in London and Europe of the world-famous American singer-songwriter Bob Dylan. The evening, in late December 1962, is remembered by Martin Carthy, a well-known English folk singer at the time:

“There was a regular Friday night folk club upstairs at the pub and I remember, while I was singing a song, there was this guy who I'd seen on the cover of some magazines sitting near the front in the audience. I finished a couple of songs, walked over to him and said, "You're Bob Dylan"!

It seems Bob was reluctant at first but eventually he performed three songs. Carthy remembers 'he had fabulous presence and a great sense of comedy',
Now, above the bar of the pub, there is a row of portraits of English Kings and Queens through the ages. Except at the very end of the row, where there is a framed black and white photo of Bob Dylan, the music legend, performing for free in the pub's upstairs room, nearly fifty year's ago.

English Tip

Get the rhythm of English
One way of getting familiar with the rhythm of English is by reading, and perhaps more importantly, reciting poetry. You might even be able to quote extracts and impress all those around you!  Don't worry if you don't understand all the words. Feeling is more important than meaning here. This will make you more comfortable with the rhythm of English, where words don't carry equal stress. It's a way into English culture and will give you a better understanding of language at its best. You can make yourself a folder with 'My favourite poems' and practise reading them aloud in your free time!
Extract from a poem below: From Tarantalla by Hilaire Belloc
And the hip! hop! hap!
Of the clap
Of the hands to the swirl and the twirl
Of the girl gone chancing,
Glancing,
Dancing,
Backing and advancing,
Snapping of the clapper to the spin
Out and in--
And the ting, tong, tang of the guitar!

School's social activities

The fascinating London Transport Museum
We visited the London Transport Museum in Covent Garden. Its a fascinating place showing the history of the world's oldest underground system as well as how London has grown and changed over the years.

A trip down the river Thames
Though it is a little cold a trip down the river Thames was a popular event this month. We saw some of the most beautiful and famous buildings in London with a very funny commentary from the boat's captain!

Wonderful live music
In a small cafe in a huge bookshop we saw some wonderful live music. There was a great atmosphere and the songs were beautiful. A fire alarm almost stopped our evening but the musician carried on playing while we were all standing outside!

Coming up Saturday, 22 May 2010, 11:00 - 13:30, Victoria Park, Hackney
First football match between the mighty Avalon FC and the red devils of SGI - who will win this inaugural game? See history in the making!

Our students speak for us

"In spite of only doing a two-week short course of refresher teacher training, it was of great benefit to me.
Before I came to London, I had been away from my teaching for almost three and half years. Lacking confidence, right before returning to my country-China I took the refresher teacher training course at St George International. At the end of the course, I have successfully rebuilt my self-confidence and also further developed my teaching techniques and professional skills. Meanwhile I have been provided with various resources for adapting materials to suit our future students' needs. Hereby, I would like to express my gratitude for all the help I have received from the professional teachers in SGI during my time there."
