Dear student,

At last summer arrives! It’s a hot June here in London, and this month we are looking forward to Wimbledon and the World Cup; lazy days by the river and in the parks; and plenty of socializing in the warm open air.

There is a lot happening as usual at the school. In this newsletter we have news about the brand new block of classrooms we have just opened, as well as the first game of the SGI football team. There is also another news item about fabulous Fitzrovia, the neighbourhood of SGI, as well as news and photos about recent social activities, news of new evening classes and events in London. Enjoy!

Best Wishes

Max Loach
School Director

SGI is expanding!

We are delighted to announce the opening of 4 brand new classrooms in the lower ground area of our London centre. These spacious classrooms increase our capacity by 52 students and have the great teaching resource of a computer with a projector in each room. This is an exciting development for SGI which reflects how we have grown and become more popular in recent years.

Here at St George International we are all very excited about our brand new partner school for executive one-to-one students. Our new partner school is located about one hour south of London, in the beautiful Hampshire countryside near the town of Winchester. The school premises are made up of a stunning 14th century manor house with extensive grounds and outhouses. Single-room accommodation and high quality catering are available on-site, just a few minutes from the classrooms, and in your spare time, you can make use of the school’s private sports facilities, including a golf-course, tennis courts and gymnasium.

Choose from a variety of intensive one-to-one courses for business or general purposes, and benefit from a residential experience that will keep you speaking English all day. For more details http://www.stgeorges.co.uk/residential-executive-courses/.

SGI: in the neighbourhood of Fitzrovia; Interesting Fact no 3 (the third in a series)

As you know, SGI is based in Central London, close to Oxford Street and Regent Street. Our neighbourhood is known as Fitzrovia, a district with a wonderfully long and colourful history. Here's the third in the series about SGI's fascinating local area.

All Saints - Margaret Street - Fitzrovia - London

All Saints Church. Margaret Street: opposite the school entrance.
We are very fortunate at St George International to be located in Margaret Street directly opposite the magnificent church of All Saints. Completed in 1852, All Saints is built in the grand Victorian Gothic style and has an absolutely wonderful interior that really takes your breath away.

One great feature of the church is the beautiful tranquil courtyard full of flowers and plants that is very popular with our students who you will see relaxing there in the coffee breaks and at lunchtime.

English lesson of the month

Take the steady road to accurate English

Accuracy in your spoken English can be achieved by taking a step by step approach to learning.  Consolidate your strengths and work on the weaker areas.  Set yourself weekly targets eg ‘This week I’ll work on singulars and plurals’.  This does not mean just with nouns, but with verbs as well. If you catch yourself saying he do instead of he does or many student instead of many students, make a mental note of it and correct yourself. Work exclusively on this for one week when you are communicating with others. Gradually the correct form will come to you more naturally and you will have mastered one point of grammar in your spoken language. This will ensure that your fluency remains in tact and you imperceptibly work on your accuracy. Make yourself a ‘Plan of action’ eg  Week 1 singulars and plurals; Week 2 using the past tense correctly. If you feel you need further practice, extend it to another week. If you’re at a more advanced level work on persistent problems at that level in a systematic and steady way.

School's social activities

Football
One Saturday morning in May we met Avalon School in Victoria Park for a football match. It was a great game and both teams played brilliantly. The weather smiled on us and it was a fantastic opportunity to meet other English language students and for some friendly rivalry.

Strange Fruit - Ringing the Changes
In May we went to watch an unusual performance by a company called Strange Fruit. There were 5 performers balanced on top of 5m high flexible poles using bells and gongs to create a truly original sound. It was amazing to watch and the weather was beautiful. After the performance we had a picnic in the garden and enjoyed the rare sunshine!

Sweet Charity
Once again we were lucky to get some excellent value tickets for a West End musical, Sweet Charity. It’s a great show with some brilliant characters and wonderful song and dance routines. Everybody enjoyed it immensely and here are the photos to prove it!

Other events included ten pin bowling with Dan, another musical treat with Sister Act as well as museum visits, drinks at the pub to welcome new students and a walking tour with our own expert tour guide, Owen.

Our students speak for us

"With my first teacher, in the morning group classes, there was good methodology, you really feel as a student that he likes his job and this gives you the desire to improve. My 1-1 teacher really helped me to understand a lot about American and British civilisation. He has a great knowledge which is going to be really helpful for me to validate my examinations in France. Overall I have had a really useful experience and have felt that all my teachers were really involved and passionate about their jobs."
