Dear student,

Happy New Year 2010 from a freezing cold London!

January finds us shivering here in London as we experience one of the coldest winters in the UK since the 1960s. Despite the bad weather the school has started the new year with a lot of new students, including a large returning group of students from Argentina as well as a good number of students starting their six month University Foundation course with us.

It is traditional to make New Year resolutions for the coming year... this means you make a list of the things you wish to achieve and do over the next twelve months. Perhaps one of your new year resolutions is to improve your English! If this is the case, then why not enter our January competition and win a free course with us!

Best Wishes

Max Loach
School Director

New website up and running!

Welcome to SGI

SGI launched the new website just before Christmas. It has a totally fresh look and you'll find it easier to navigate and find what you need. If you still haven't see it, take a look now.

And to celebrate it, we have a competition where you can win an English course with us, check below.

Win an English course in London!

We're running a short survey to find out what you think about our new website. Your responses will help us to ensure we meet your needs.

Take a few moments to complete the survey for your chance to win an English course with us in London. You only need to check the page and follow the instructions.

SGI Work Placements

2009 was an excellent year for our Internship Programme and we have helped our students gain some fantastic placements in London. Just a few examples:

• Laboratory research assistant in a major London hospital
• Assistant in a legal office
• Art Gallery assistant on London's South Bank
• Online researcher for an events organiser
• Finance department assistant of a property company
• Assistant in a travel agency
• Assistant in a student accommodation agency
• Design assistant in a naval engineering company
• Assistant in a recruitment consultancy
• Software developer with an IT consultancy
• Styling, Studio and Catwalk Assistant at a fashion house
• and many more….

Remember, internships are available to EU citizens only for a minimum of one month, and require a minimum language level of intermediate. Students can book an internship on its own, or combine it with an English language course.

If you would like to book students on internships, please email Tommi Muttonen.

For further details, see the Work Experience page on the website.

English lesson of the month

You have been shortlisted!

What is the meaning of this sentence?

Imagine that you and 49 other people send the CV to a company in order to be considered for a job position there. The company has the names of these 50 job candidates on a list. The recruiters at the company go through all the CV's and make a new list. This time the list is much shorter and only has the names of the people they are considering to invite for a job interview. This is the "shortlist".

You have been "shortlisted" means that your name is on the shortlist along with a few other people. You are therefore close to being chosen.

Our students speak for us

"Thanks for the given opportunity at St George International. Everything was fine. I would like to note especially the friendly atmosphere in the classroom, the high qualified teachers and the good location of the school. I hope in the future to return to SGI in order to further improve my language skills. I shall recommend your school to my friends interested in learning English."
