SGI is one of the oldest language schools in London with over 47 years of teaching English to people from all over the world
Hi %%Firstname%%,
Christmas is a great time of year at the school and in Central London generally. The Christmas lights glamorise and brighten up the main shopping streets, the shop window displays become even more enticing than usual, and when night falls the streets are packed with people from all over the world celebrating the season.
The school is particularly busy for this time of year with record numbers of students doing IELTS and the University Foundation courses and this trend is set to continue into the New Year. Perhaps we shall see you at the school in 2010 but until then….
Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!

English tip of the month
Choose the right word
One measure of language proficiency is the range of your vocabulary. A good idea is to keep lists of words which are similar in meaning but with slight variations which would be appropriate in different contexts. This would add precision and richness to your speech and writing.
For example, if you want to express this idea of something which is necessary you can simply use the word 'important':
It is important to work regularly in order to get good results.
However, it would demonstrate a lack of imagination if you always used ‘important’ instead of any other expression which might make the meaning more distinct in a particular situation. The skill of using the right word is important for students studying English for business or academic purposes, or simply for general communication.
Below is a list of words that would come under the general umbrella of ‘important’ but some are stronger than others:
The list above, which is by no means complete, illustrates the range of vocabulary available.
Don’t be afraid to experiment with words; accuracy will come with practice. Start with becoming more aware when you read and listen; keep systematic records; and above all use them. There’s not much point in keeping a list if you never use the words there!
Don’t be afraid of making mistakes!

Our students speak for us
“The English course at SGI in London was an exciting, intense and profitable experience. The school provides a good location in central London , a perfect place for business and meetings. I highly recommend Saint George International to my colleagues and other professional leaders.”
Enrique Goñi from Spain (CEO of Spanish bank Caja Navarra)
“You might think that I am crazy because when I first came to London 3 years ago, I couldn’t speak any English. After 9 months of General English and Conversation Courses, because I wanted to go to university in the UK, I took SGI’s IELTS Course. Highly experienced teachers give you advice & tips on how to get good marks in the test. So, at SGI I saw real improvements in my English language. I could not speak English at all 3 years ago, but I am now writing my story here in English.”
