History of the English Language

Siemens Professional Education students learning English at SGI

At SGI, our most recent specialist course for a closed group of students was for Siemens Professional Education from the famous Siemensstadt in Berlin.

One of our very own SGI trained teachers has been teaching an annual 2-week English course in Siemens Berlin for many years, but this was the first time that a group of Siemens students flew to London to study in the UK capital.

Back home in Berlin, this group of 16 students study subjects in preparation to be future managers within Siemens.

After detailed discussions between SGI's Director of Studies and the relevant Siemens HR manager, we created an English course to help improve English skills in business:

  • Telephone skills: talking about products, taking messages, giving advice, dealing with unexpected problems
  • Giving Opinions: agreeing and disagreeing
  • Negotiations: offering products
  • General Business: describing trends, describing statistics, predictions and speculations on future of their sector
  • Emailing: exercises in formal and informal emails
  • Presenting: preparing to make own mini presentation
  • BULATS: Exam preparation to take the Cambridge BULATS test

Business Language Testing Service

The BULATS test from Cambridge English exams is an online test to assess workplace language skills.

All the students from Berlin took this test during their final days at SGI, so that they received a Cambridge certificate stating their current level of Business English.

Social Programme in London

When you come to London to study, it's not just about learning English. A big part of the whole experience is to explore and discover possibly the coolest city in the world.

We arranged closed social programme events for our German group every day.

One of the most popular events was the guided walk by our very own qualified guide and English teacher, Owen. He is absolutely full of extremely interesting and informative facts about the history of London and these walks are always super popular with any group that is lucky enough to go on a tour with him. Every group always gives the same feedback. All students also always say that Owen has a very clear and understandable accent.
