History of the English Language

English course in London for students from Denmark

At the end of April, SGI welcomed a group of teenagers from Denmark who came to study English in London.

The Danish group consisted of 15 teenagers from Havregården Boarding School in Denmark who studied on a specially created intensive 3-day English course. These classes were closed for this group like many previous groups of students from other countries as wide ranging as Italy and China

This is the fourth time that Saint George International have hosted a student group from Havregården school in Denmark.

ENGLISH LESSONS IN LONDON

After a pre-course needs analysis with the Danish teachers, the general English lessons in London focussed British culture and pronunciation.

The course covered cultural aspects such as music in the UK, British slang (very popular) and the ever growing attractions of UK cuisine… yes, British food IS good!

The students particularly liked learning English pronunciation using the Phonemic Chart (which you can find on the wall in every SGI classroom) to help the accuracy of saying certain English words and phrases.

The SGI teachers of this group all reported that the students were very friendly, energetic and motivated to improve their English skills and also extremely supportive of each other.

SOCIAL PROGRAMME AROUND LONDON

The Danish group had a mini SGI social programme arranged for them.

Firstly, they went to see Central London from high up on The London Eye at Westminster. This is one of the best ways to see the famous buildings of London from the best view point. The students had their own ‘capsule’, so one student (who shall remain nameless to protect their identity) even ‘mooned’ London from high up. (This means that they exposed their bottom!)

On another night, SGI got discounted tickets for the whole group to go and see the world famous Lion King musical at The Lyceum theatre, near Covent Garden. As you can imagine, this was a real highlight for our Danish visitors, as is our weekly theatre trips to a different musical or London play every week on the SGI Student Social programme.

The Danes also ate some cakes and had some drinks at The Word Cafe (next door to SGI in Margaret Street) which is where we have our regular ‘Meet and Greet’ social event every Monday for new students to chat with an SGI teacher and other students from all around the world.
