An interesting French influence on the city is that of the French born painter Adolphe Valette, often referred to as the 'Manchester impressionist'. A number of his atmospheric paintings of the city hang in the Manchester Art Gallery. Whilst a critically-acclaimed painter in his own right, he is also famous for being the teacher of that famous son of Manchester, L S Lowry, when Valette was a teacher and Lowry a student at the Manchester College of Art.
