Reds, Manchester United, the evocative paintings of L S Lowry and their
depiction of the city's life, the beloved national institution of Coronation
Street and internationally acclaimed popsters like Oasis; these are perhaps
some of the likely first things that enter your head when thinking of
Manchester, that vibrant proud city in the North West of England with its
historically diverse population and strongs sense of community.
An interesting French influence on the city is that of the French born
painter Adolphe Valette, often referred to as the 'Manchester impressionist'.
A number of his atmospheric paintings of the city hang in the Manchester Art
Gallery. Whilst a critically-acclaimed painter in his own right, he is also
famous for being the teacher of that famous son of Manchester, L S Lowry,
when Valette was a teacher and Lowry a student at the Manchester College of
Art.
