Learn French In London
at St George International
What is
there to say about London that hasn't already been said? Everybody knows the
big 'stuff'….the main attractions, its immensely long and turbulent history,
its extraordinarily diverse and shifting population. This is all known, along
with the big facts….its a major global city and one of the world's largest
financial centres, (yes still, despite the credit crunch!).
Of course one thing about London that can be emphasised is the fact that
there are really a million different Londons and there are always new hidden
treasures to find. Here is an example of a hidden London that is most
definitely off the beaten track……
Dennis Severs House, in Spitalfields, East London. When entering the house
you are taken back in time to a family of Huguenot silk-traders in the early
18th century. It is though the family have just left the rooms….there's a
half-eaten meal on the table and voices seemingly coming from elsewhere in
the house. There's a powerful sense of going back in time and being in the
presence of Londoners of a bygone age. Of course the French spoken by the Huguenots, who came to England to escape
religious persecution in the 16th century and 17th centuries, is a very
different French from that spoken in France today….. and in London!
