Academic English Courses in London
This course is primarily aimed at students currently living in London and who are either studying or planning to study at a university or college here. The key objective of the course is to improve students' Academic English writing and their use of English for seminars, lectures and presentations.
SGI, with its considerable experience in English language teaching and particularly Academic English have devised this 6 week afternoon course in response to public demand. The course is held once a week from 4.30 - 6.30 on Tuesdays. With a maximum of 6 participants on a course, students are guaranteed a very high level of personal attention and participation.
Academic English writing element
The course is a practical one and covers key aspects of Academic English writing . On the course students will:
- Study the 'process approach' to writing
- Focus on the micro-skills of writing: effective introductions & conclusions, communicating ideas clearly, using evidence to support ideas, and learning more complex sentence structures
- Develop formal academic style and understand different genres of writing
- Review common grammar mistakes and build on useful vocabulary
- Receive guidance for assignments set by university
Study Skills element
Key aspects of Academic study skills for university are covered. On the course students will:
- Build confidence for leading and participating in seminars
- Review language for expressing ideas clearly and giving balanced opinions
- Learn how to identify key ideas in lectures
- Learn effective note-taking strategies
- Develop awareness of word/sentence stress and connected speech
- Study presentation techniques and how to deal with Q&As
