English for private hire drivers (SELT exam preparation)

Need to pass an English test for your TfL driver licence renewal? Thinking of applying to become a TfL licensed driver?

Transport for London (TfL) have recently introduced a requirement that all current licensed private hire drivers or new applicants for a licence, must complete a Trinity College London Secure English Language Test (SELT) to meet a new English language requirement. St George International (SGI) is the main authorised Trinity College London SELT preparation course provider in London, able to provide expert test preparation to meet these new TfL’s licensed driver requirements. 

The Trinity College London Integrated Skills in English (ISE) test at B1 level* (Trinity ISE 1) 

ISE I consists of two exam modules: Reading & Writing, Speaking & Listening

Reading & Writing 2 hours:  Speaking & Listening 18 minutes:
  • 2 x Reading tasks
  • 1 x Reading into writing task
  • 1 x Writing task
  • 1 x Topic task
  • 1 x Conversation task
  • 2 x Listening tasks

*CEFR levels of English –The Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR) is an international standard for describing language ability. For example A1 is beginner level, B1 is intermediate level.

All drivers must pass the Trinity College London Integrated Skills in English (ISE) test at B1 level*. The test involves writing, reading, listening and speaking. Following testing, drivers will be offered one of the following three group preparation options for this test.

Group A – drivers whose writing is clearly at a B1 level or above – 3 hours of group exam preparation = £40 per person for the 3 hours

Group B - drivers whose writing is close to a B1 level  – 6 hours of group exam preparation emphasis on the writing element = £80 per person for the 6 hours

Group C – drivers who need a lot of work on their writing – 12 hours of group exam preparation emphasis on the writing element = £140 per person for the 12 hours

Flexible Private Tuition Option 

Group A – drivers whose writing is clearly at a B1 level or above – 2 hours of Private Tuition exam preparation = £90

Group B - drivers whose writing is close to a B1 level  – 4 hours of Private Tuition exam preparation with emphasis on the writing element = £160

Group C – drivers who need a lot of work on their writing – 8 hours of Private Tuition exam preparation with emphasis on the writing element = £280
