I didn't mean to imply that Afrikaans is wholly descended from German. It's just that I also speak German and there were some noticeable and surprising similarities. I really love the way you can find sister words across seemingly unrelated languages (I'm noticing some in Spanish and Russian now). Anyway, as stated, these conversations aren't planned (so that they are completely natural) so we can make some mistakes from time to time...just like in everyday chat.
