If you think your English grammar is bad, then take a look at this!

English grammar – ahh, is it a thing of beauty to be marvelled at, or just something really annoying to make students get irritated when learning the language?  In the UK there is a competition every year to highlight extremely bad uses of English grammar. The 2014 Bad grammar includes grammar errors from members of the government, the supermarket giant Tesco, the Army and even a primary school!!! Not only are these English institutions that really should be able to produce correct English without any grammar mistakes, but we can presume that the examples below were also written by English native speakers! Not very good, is it?

Bad English Grammar Errors

Tesco – “Our most tastiest orange juice” Army – “For any inquiries please contact you’re nearest Army Careers Office” Primary School – “We all wash are hands after playing in the sandpits”

COULD YOU SPOT THE MISTAKES?

“Our most tastiest orange juice” GRAMMAR RULE: If you have an adjective that ends with ‘y’, like tasty or dirty, then the superlative is tastiest / dirtiest. You delete the ‘y’ and add ‘-iest’. You do NOT add ‘more’.   “For any inquiries please contact you’re nearest Army Careers Office” GRAMMAR RULE: In British English, when you want some information, you make an enquiry. An ‘inquiry’ is an official investigation into a serious matter. you’re means ‘you are’. Here they wanted to say ‘your’, like your pen, your Mum, your nearest library is the library closest to where you live.   “We all wash are hands after playing in the sandpits” Again, this is another possessive grammar mistake. They should have said, ‘our hands’, not ‘are hands’. This is a really bad error. I think this one might win the 2014 Bad Grammar prize.       Improve your English grammar by studying with SGI Take the SGI English grammar test online.
