5th Annual SGI Oscars Party
Summer 2007

“And the winner is…”
Camera flashes and the screams of excitement and adoration meet the announcement of the world’s newest celebrity. Fame, fortune and rock ’n’ roll - SGI style.

The 5th annual SGI Oscars Party was, of course, the big event of the summer. The instructions were simple: be there at 7.30pm and dress like a star. This meant different things to different people. There were Hollywood style hats and sunglasses, beautiful long dresses, pirates, an Audrey Hepburn, and those who clearly felt that they dressed like stars every day of the week.

Josh, Director of Studies and Master of Ceremonies for the evening, commented “It was really very well attended, with great atmosphere and the Oscar winners were met with rapturous applause”. This was probably because it was the students themselves who voted for the ten winners in five different categories – nicest, funniest, best dressed, biggest party animal and most eligible. “I never thought I would get one award, but I felt really special. It must be that I won’t ever forget about it in all my life,” said In Seok, picture left, winner in the best dressed category.

The private bar in Covent Garden was soon packed with students and teachers enjoying free Sangria. The buzz of anticipation rose to a crescendo as everybody waited for the announcement of the winners. “I’m not sure I remember the rest, but the start was really nice. I drank a lot of cider” commented Yulia, picture right, who later won the funniest student award.
Josh, demonstrating extensive experience at involving the whole crowd, built up the excitement and tension as the award winners were announced. “Josh did a really great job in whipping up the excitement levels and all the award winners were met with cheers and wolf whistles” Amy the teacher commented later in the evening.
And then the real party started. “I was lucky because I had a very good experience and I got to know all of my schoolmates. It was totally awesome!” said In Seok. Beating off strong competition, teacher Gaverne was unanimously recognised as king of the dance floor.
Tired but happy, the majority headed home after the bar closed at midnight. The hardcore, however, led by the indefatigable Josh, headed to new and darker dance spots. The last word goes to Julia, “It was a really great night and it’d be nice to have more of these parties”.
